Fisting Scars Tokyo 2002
Our first exhibition in Tokyo. Music by Kirk Hellie was installed in the gallery with motion detectors. Upon entering the main room you could stand in front of certain pieces of art & change the sound of the entire gallery. The first four Foti characters debuted & was the beginning of Foti by Chrome Hearts.
Phantasmagoria Osaka 2002
Our second show in Japan One definition of Phantasmagoria is “ a sequence of real or imaginary images like those in a dream”. Upon finding this word in the dictionary I thought it was a great way to describe the art. A musical performance was provided by Kirk Hellie with amazing strange noises & dancing dildos.
Rewarding The Ugly Tokyo 2004
This exhibition was the first show back in Japan after moving back to Los Angeles. After five years in Japan my culture shock was triggered by how Americans had fallen in love with bad reality TV. It seemed like if you were stupid, rude & offensive you became rich & famous. So I titled the show “Rewarding The Ugly” to reflect what I was seeing back in the states.
HANDHORSEMAN Tokyo 2007
The concept for this show was about a fictional Native American NASA pilot who disappeared during training. For this show we were given the old “Idee Pacific” building next to the Chrome Hearts Aoyama shop. One month after our exhibition the building was to be torn down for the expansion of the Chrome Hearts shop. An amazing opportunity to do whatever we wanted to a four story shop in Tokyo.
Floojin Stamp Tokyo+Osaka 2009
Many people ask me what does Floojin Stamp mean? It means nothing. Just a made up word that our cat Shandi loved. The concept for the art in this show came after traveling to Germany & seeing photographs of beautiful churches that had been destroyed during World War Two . Among the horrible destruction were religious statures & art pieces twisted & broken . Still beautiful despite the chaos around them.
Here Comes Mr. Oculus Tokyo+Osaka 2011
The art in this exhibition was inspired by a dream I had in Rome Italy. We were staying at a hotel near the Pantheon & I had this dream about alien spaceships flying in & out of the Oculus (the round opening at the top of the dome inside). These ships were going around the universe saving art that was about to be destroyed by wars or vandals. Right before destruction of the art these space ships would fly in & take the art. They would display these works of art on the outside of their spaceships.
The Adventures From Beaver Creek pt.1 Tokyo 2013
The next three exhibitions were about the small town of Bristol Tennessee. A place I lived in from 1964-1978. I have amazing fond memories of this little town that is so full of America history it took six years & three shows to explain. It started when I was curious one night about what happened during the American Civil war in this town. I found great books on the history of Bristol by a town historian named V.N. Bud Phillips. So this first show was about my childhood memories & some of the civil war stories I had read about . During research for this show on a trip to Bristol I realized I needed three shows to explain it all.
The Adventures From Beaver Creek pt.2 Tokyo+Fukuoka 2015
The second Beaver show was about more of my memories as child & more on the amazing history of this town. I traveled back to Bristol & was lucky to be invited to the home of V.N. Bud Phillips the town historian. Mr. Phillips was so kind & helpful & told us many stories about the town. Bristol is the birthplace of country music in America . In 1927 Ralph Peer held recording sessions in Bristol which is called the “Big Bang” of Country music. It is also the last place anyone saw Hank Williams alive.
The Adventures From Beaver Creek pt.3 Tokyo 2017
The third & final show about Bristol. This show focused more on my experiences there & some of the amazing odd things about this town. Bristol like so many American small towns was once booming with industry. Sadly now most factories have left & the people are also leaving. These three show reflected on how Americas beautiful & once prosperous small towns are fading away. A beautiful town in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee. I will always have a soft spot for this place.
MIMICHAMBERS Tokyo+Osaka 2019
This show was focused on Atlanta Georgia, the next town I lived in after Bristol. Moving from Bristol to Atlanta was like Dorothy opening the black & white world onto the beautiful colors of OZ. My last year of High School being the new kid was kind of hard but certain people made it wonderful for me. One simple act of kindness by a certain girl made it bearable to be there. Some 30 years after Atlanta I still remember that kind person. It was also the first time I had so many diverse friends. Working at a hotel in Downtown Atlanta really opened my eyes to so many underground things. So much of the art focused on my time in Atlanta.
Zeta Reticuli Tokyo+Osaka 2022
Zeta Reticuli is a wide binary star system in the southern constellation of the reticulum. From the southern hemisphere, the pair can be seen with the naked eye as a double star in very dark skies.I believe that in early 2020 I began getting signals from Zeta Reticuli inspiring me to make art while thinking about that special location. When I make art I often feel like I get help from some kind of fairy or satyr. But this time I think he help was coming from deep space. Specifically ,Zeta Reticuli. The Voyager space program by NASA also was highly inspirational. So much of the art in this exhibition is unusual in combination. Also thanks for all the great lessons from Carl Sagan.
Zeta Reticuli 2 Tokyo+Osaka+Fukuoka 2024
Since Zeta Reticuli is a binary star system the first show represents the first star. This show is the second star in the system. Watch as we follow Skippy & her journey across the universe. Starting off in Tokyo she is in super large form. As she gets to Osaka she has begun her trip back home. Finally we she her in Fukuoka getting small & hard to see in the dark world of space. All along the way is Naskull to help guide her way home & keep her safe. With the help of Voyager & Voyager 2 Skippy is almost home. Thanks to Carl Sagan for all the inspiration.
